Varanasi, April 23, 2014: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal filed his nomination for the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat on Wednesday. The AAP leader is pitched against BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, who will be filing his nomination on Thursday.

kejriwal Earlier, Kejriwal launched a stinging attack on Congress president Rahul Gandhi and BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.

While addressing the AAP supporters, Kejriwal, who held a road show said that the Elections 2014 are about eradicating poverty and corruption.

Coming down hard at Rahul Gandhi, the AAP leader said that when he was campaigning in Amethi for his colleague Kumar Vishwas, people told him that Gandhis have cheated them for decades. Taking a dig at the Congress president, Kejriwal said that the people see the Gandhi only in helicopters.

“In Amethi, I heard people saying that they would vote for someone who is accessible so that we can discuss our problems with our leader,” the AAP chief said.

The activist turned politician, who is contesting against Modi, left no stone unturned in attacking the Gujarat Chief Minister as well.

Mocking the BJP strongman, Kejriwal said that like Rahul, Modi would also arrive in a helicopter and land at Banaras Hindu University, which was set up by Madan Mohan Malviya.

“Malviyaji didn’t allowed any political person or police to march into the BHU campus, but on Thursday, Modi along with his supporters and numerous security personnel will enter the University campus,” Kejriwal said, adding from there on the BJP leader will again take the chopper to land at Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith. “Why can’t the Gujarat CM travel by road to Kashi,” the AAP leader quipped.

He urged the electorates not to vote for Modi, otherwise they would also be cheated like the people of Amethi.

He said that while camping in Varanasi, he interacted with the locals and got a first hand experience of the problems faced by the people of the holy city. “People need a representative who understands the problems faced by people, whom they can ask questions and not just who comes and goes off in a helicopter,” Kejriwal asserted.

On his way to file his nomination papers for the Lok Sabha polls from this holy city, the AAP leader highlighted the "massive" spending in the advertisement campaigns for BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate and Congress Vice President and asked people to decide what kind of democracy they want.

"Somebody was saying that Modi is spending Rs 5000 crore in advertisements. Gandhi is also spending a lot of money. You watch TV, read newspapers, see billboards, they are there and everywhere. If he (Modi) is elected to power, he will make at least Rs 5 lakh crore.

The battle for the the most prestigious constituencies in politically crucial Uttar Pradesh has become the most interesting one as BJP has fielded Modi, while the Congress has has fielded Ajay Rai.

45-year-old Kejriwal, who had led his fledging AAP to a spectacular victory in the Delhi Assembly polls in December last year, has been trying to replicate the successful Delhi campaign model here by holding scores of road shows and corner meetings across Varanasi.

In 2009 Lok Sabha elections, senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi had won the seat defeating gangster-cum-politician Mukhtar Ansari by a margin of 17,000 votes.

Quami Ekta Dal’s Ansari, who is known to have a strong support base among Muslims, has decided not to contest against Modi from the seat "to avoid division of secular votes".

The four-time MLA from Mau is currently lodged in Agra jail in BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai murder case.

Congress has fielded Ajay Rai, a Varanasi local, who is an MLA from Pindra assembly constituency. Samajwadi Party candidate Kailash Chaurasiya is also a sitting MLA from nearby Mirzapur.

Both Rai and Chaurasiya have already filed their nominations.

The entry of Modi and Kejriwal has escalated the political temperature in the battle turning it into one of the most keenly watched contests in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

Varanasi will go to polls May 12 in the last phase of the Lok Sabha polls 2014.
