Bharat Ratna conferred on Madan Mohan Malviya, family receives the award

New Delhi, March 30, 2015: The country’s highest civilian award Bharat Ratna was conferred posthumously upon educationist Madan Mohan Malviya at Rashtrapati Bhavan today.

 	  	 MohanThe award was received by Malviya’s family for his contribution in the country’s freedom struggle and in the field of education.

Remembered as the founder of Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Malviya was also the president of Indian National Congress for four times. He left Congress in 1934. He was also one of the initial leaders of the Hindu Mahasabha.

Born on December 25, 1861 in Allahabad, Malviya also served as the Chairman of Hindustan Times from 1924 to 1946.

On December 24 last year, a day before his 153rd birth anniversary, government has announced Bharat Ratna for him.

On Friday, former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee was also presented with Bharat Ratna at his residence in New Delhi.
