Feb 08, 2016: The manager of the Indian team during the 2014 tour of England, Sunil Dev has been caught on tape alleging that MS Dhoni had thrown the Manchester Test.

Dev has been recorded on a spy camera talking contemptuously about Dhoni’s decision to bat in Manchester under cloudy conditions. He claimed that he brought the controversial decision to the attention of BCCI president N. Srinivasan, who chose to do nothing.

The sting was conducted by Hindi daily Sun Star, who posted their recording to YouTube.

Dev has since then rubbished Sun Star’s claims and said he is planning to sue them. “It is all rubbish,” he told Times Of India. “I am planning to sue this Hindi daily and will seek legal recourse against anyone else who makes such malicious claims.”

The Manchester Test was crucial to the outcome of the series. India elected to bat in overcast conditions and were reduced to 4-8 in the opening hour. They never recovered from the collapse, losing the Test badly, and going on to lose again at the Oval, where they were bowled out for 148 and 94.

Dev alleged that Dhoni’s decision to bat, when the situation was obviously advantageous to James Anderson and Stuart Broad, was proof that the game was fixed.

Dev, a former cricketer and a cricket administrator from Delhi, is no stranger to match-fixing related controversies. In 1997, he had management duties on tours of South Africa and Zimbabwe when he had first made noises about corruption in the sport.
