China Releases video of First-Ever Ballistic Missile Defence System Test

Beijing, China, July 26, 2016: Amid America’s move to deploy THAAD anti-missile system in South Korea, China has released footage of its first-ever test of ballistic missile interception system conducted six years ago to flaunt its own expertise in the complex technology.

"The ballistic missile defence system is a critical link in our strategic defence, and is also an important chip in the contest between big powers. It makes a world of difference whether you have it or not," PLA researcher Chen Deming said.

The system itself is one of the keys of China’s domestic defence capabilities, Mr Deming was quoted as saying by China Radio International (CRI).

The anti-missile system has undergone more successful tests since 2010, including another test in January 2013, said china-org.cn website which published the photo of the test.

Footage of the original test has been released on the heels of the US and South Korea agreeing to deploy the Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) anti-missile system before the end of next year.

While the US insists the system is to defend South Korea from possible attacks from North Korea, Chinese officials have condemned its planned deployment, saying it threatens China’s security.

China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi has warned his South Korean counterpart the THAAD deployment also diminishes the level of trust between the two countries.
