High and dry: Kerala to go dry as High Court upholds liquor policy

Mangalore Today News Network

New Delhi, April 01 2015: The Kerala High Court on Tuesday approved the state’s controversial no-liquor policy, saying it is in line with the Indian Constitution. The court ruled that alcohol should be served only in the 26 five star hotels across the state.

keralaHowever, the court also ratified the government decision to amend its liquor policy to allow beer and wine parlours in 400-plus closed bars in the state. The beer and wine parlours have been allowed in the closed bars to check the loss of jobs as well as the impact of the policy on tourism sector.

The High Court decision now allows the 374 three- and four-star hotels to apply for only beer and wine parlour licences.

Kerala, called the God’s Own Country, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in India.

In October last year, the High Court had ordered the closure of all the bars in two- and three-star hotels in Kerala following an August order issued by the UDF government to close over 700 liquor outlets in the state.

The bar owners in the state had called the order "discriminatory and arbitrary" and approached the Supreme Court.
