Alarge number of devotees are already flocking to the village to visit the ancestral house of Blessed Chavara, where he was born to Iko Chavara and Mariam Thoppil on February 10, 1805.

Hundreds are flocking the village despite the only means to reach the village being a few boats pressed into service by the Kerala State Water Transport Department and a numbered country boats.

“Elaborate arrangements have been made at Chavara Bhavan and Chennamkari church, where Fr Chavara was baptized and also presided over the Holy Qurbana for the first time, as part of the canonization celebrations to be held on November 22 and 23,” said Fr John Pandalanickal, the vicar in charge of Chavara Bhavan.   He said on November 20 a Holy Mass would be held at the church at 9 am, following which a procession would be taken out on boats to Chavara Bhavan.

Around 200 boats and 10,000 faithful are expected to participate in the rally. “On November 23, students will take out a procession from Kainakari junction to Chavara Bhavan,” Fr John added.

MP Kodikunnil Suresh told a gathering of the media that the district administration, police and other government departments would extend all support for the smooth conduct of canonisation celebrations.

“Fr Chavara is the patron saint of Kuttanad. His canonization will a remarkable moment for the people in the region,” he said.   He said all major roads leading to Chavara Bhavan would be renovated before the canonization day and promised to allot "five lakh for the renovation of coastal road from Govendha Jetty to SNDP Jetty.  It seems that Kerala is fast gaining ground as a place for saints.
