Over 1,84,000 people rescued in flood-hit J-K so far

Sept. 14, 2014: Jammu and Kashmir is battling one of the worst floods in decades with rivers in the region in spate due to days of incessant rain. Over 250 people have died and thousands are stranded across the state, including Srinagar.

The Army, IAF and NDRF are doing a massive round-the-clock rescue and relief operation, with 86 aircrafts and 30,000 troops.

09:00 pm: More than 1,84,000 people have been so far rescued by the armed forces and NDRF from different parts of the flood-ravaged Jammu and Kashmir, government said.

08:25 pm: 700 people stranded due to devastating floods in Jammu and Kashmir were evacuated by Air India which operated eight flights to Srinagar and two to Leh.

It also carried about 11 tonnes of relief material including blankets, medicines and drinking water.

About 250 passengers were evacuated from Leh and 450 from Srinagar, the airlines said.

08:00 pm: Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Sunday assured Jammu and Kashmir health authorities of providing assistance to tackle any possible epidemic following the recent floods there.

With the threat of disease outbreak lurking in flood-ravaged Jammu and Kashmir, efforts have been initiated on a war-footing to provide medical staff and medicines even as rescue operations were slightly hampered on Sunday due to return of rains in the Valley.

Armed forces and National Disaster Relief Force have rescued over two lakh trapped people as the operations entered the 13th day. Over one lakh people are still marooned after the worst floods in the state in a century unleashed a trail of death and destruction, claiming at least 250 lives.
