Mangalore, April 17, 2014: A polling of 77.19 per cent has been registered in Dakshina Kannada Lok Sabha constituency at closing on April 17, Thursday. This is  three percent more than the last Lok Sabha elections of 2009. Over all, the polling was peacefull and trouble free.


Dakshina Kannada created history on Thursday when more than three-fourths of its voters turned up at polling booths to elect their MP. People are seen lined up in front of polling booths to cast their votes enthusiastically through out the day. A whopping 12,07,262 people pressed the EVM buttons on Thursday compared to 10.15 lakh in 2009.


As usual, urban voters were less enthusiastic than their rural counterparts. The turnout was highest in Sullia (84.42 per cent) and lowest in Mangalore City South (70.13). It was 70.78 per cent in Mangalore City North and Mangalore 74.57. Bantwal and Puttur also recorded more than 80.52 per cent polling. Balthangadi scored 76.75%, Moodbidri-75.04%, Puttur- 82.53%

Addressing press persons, A B Ibrahim, Deputy Commissioner expressed happiness over the response of the voters and said that he and other officials had been working hard to ensure free and fair elections. Barring a few complaints of proxy voting, trespass, absence of names in voters’ list, the polling was peacefull in the entire constituency.


Dakshina Kannada Constituency where 14 candidates including B Janardhana Poojary of the Congress, Nalin Kumar Kateel of the BJP and MR Vasudeva of the AAP are in the fray. There are a total of 1564093 voters in DK including 7,90.423 female voters and 7,73,602 men voters.

 

According to sources, a 68-year-old woman after casting her vote collapsed and breathed her last at Vamanjoor.  The deceased has been identified as Gangu, wife of Krishnappa Poojary, a resident of Moodshedde.
