In the encyclical, the pope shed light on consumerism and irresponsible development and lamented environmental degradation and global warming. He had called upon the people of the world to take swift and unified global action.

Mangalore diocese will hold a special programme ’Nature’s Protection-My Responsibility’ to motivate Catholics to preserve the environment. The programme is aimed at motivating Catholics to plant saplings, promote biogas, solar energy and reduce consumption of conventional energy.

The diocese will also organize the programme at Milagres Main Hall in the city on Saturday at 10am. District minister B Ramanath Rai, MLC Ivan D’Souza, Mangaluru City South MLA J R Lobo, and mayor Jacintha Vijay Alfred will honour the community members, who contributed for the protection of the environment. Mangalore diocese bishop Most Rev Aloysius Paul D’Souza will preside over the programme.

SRC coordinator Fr Onil D’Souza told sources that the papal letter has already received the appreciation of Ban Ki-moon, the secretary-general of the United Nations. "Felicitation programme will be held to honour heads of Catholic institutions and individuals, who have planted large number of saplings, installed biogas plants, and used solar energy," he said.

He added that the diocese will hold Vanamahotsava every year.
