Hindu Assn. condemns government’s move to demolish temples

Mangalore, Aug 21: Mohan Gowda, the spokesperson of Hindu Jana Jagruthi Samithi, said that the state government has approved the demolition of 641 temples because they are illegal structures.

press meet

He was speaking at a press conference held at Hotel Woodlands on Aug 21, Saturday. He added that the Hindu Jana Jagruthi Samithi in collaboration with other like-minded associations will fight to save these temples, especially because some of the unidentified temples in DK are over 3 centuries old.

He said that the government should provide a detailed explanation of how these temples hinder the district’s development before approving their demolition. Some of these religious places comprise temples, Jain bastis, churches, and bhajana mandirs, he said.

Pointing out that these temples receive large donations, he said that the government hardly releases any fund for the development of these temples as tourist centres, but mercilessly approves their demolition.

The Samithi plans to organize a convention to create awareness on this issue, launch a signature campaign, and distribute pamphlets among the common people, he said. Mr. Ram Bhat will lead the campaign, he added.

Mr. Ram Bhat said that the government should refrain from demolishing temples, which are over 30 years old, especially when they do not hinder the district’s development in any way.

Honorary President of the Committee Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, Member Lakshmeesh Gabbaladka, and Madhusudhan were present during the press conference.
