Plane crash victims’ families willing to accept Nanavathi’s terms

Mangalore, Dec 14, 2011 : Nanavathi, the legal representative of AI, has been meeting the families of the victims of the Mangalore plane crash of May 22 and has already heard a number of appeals. He has informed families that they will receive compensation instantly if they withdraw the case they have filed through the Swedish lawyer Stephen Ericcson. According to reliable sources, several families are willing to accept Nanavathi’s suggestion.

Reportedly, Nanavathi has informed the families that he will disburse compensation at the earliest if they provide proof that they have written a letter to Stephen, instructing him to withdraw their cases, as waiting for his response will take a long time.

 

Previously, the victims’ families were required to sign an agreement that they had fully accepted the compensation as a final settlement and thereby give up their right to approach courts for extra compensation. Owing to the legal battle launched by several families, families no longer have to sign such an agreement. President of the Mangalore Air Crash Victims’ Families Association Mohammed Beary said that AI has left the families free to approach courts to demand more compensation even after they have accepted the compensation offered by them.

Stating that several families have demanded immediate compensation since they need the money urgently, he said that they have conveyed the message that they are willing to accept almost any compensation AI will determine and then wait for the court to decide if AI should give more compensation.

He said that the association has already approached the Supreme Court and added that if the court passes the order that the families should be paid full compensation, they will demand that this verdict should be made applicable to all families that have accepted compensation from AI.
