Sparrows have disappeared, thanks to modern technology

Karkala, Oct 7, 2012:Wellknown environmentalist and Poornaprajna College retired principal Dr N A Madhyastha lamented over drastic decline in number of birds every year.

Speaking at the convention of bird watchers of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, organised by S A Hussain Memorial Trust and Bhuvanendra College here on Sunday, he noted that the increased use of modern technology has resulted in disappearance of sparrows. The number of crows which are found in our neighbourhood have also declined. There is a decline in number of birds in irrigated areas. The number of migrant birds visiting various places have also declined over the years.”

The imbalance in nature has affected number of birds. There is ample opportunities for study on wetland and wetland birds. Dr T V Ramachandra of Centre for Ecological Sciences, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, delivered the key-note address.

Dr S V Narasimhan, MIT final-year student Ramith Singhal, entrepreneur Rohith Rao, NMPT’s T S N Murthy narrated their experiences as a bird watcher. Sri Bhuvanendra College Principal Prof Y Panduranga Nayak spoke on the occasion. Dr Krishna Mohan Prabhu of Prabhu General Hospital, Moodbidri, received S A Hussain Memorial Environment Award on the occasion.
