’Sportsman 2014’ sports science workshop concludes

Manipal, Nov 27, 2014: The two-day workshop on sports science, ’Sportsman 2014’ which concluded here on Tuesday provided participants working knowledge through hands-on training and update on the various aspects of training sports persons.

The participants included, physical education teachers of Academy of General Education Institutions and Manipal University physical education director, Marena sports complex trainers and coaches.

Talking at the concluding function of the workshop, Dr H S Ballal, Pro-Chancellor Manipal University said the workshop was designed to update and educate physical educationists, trainers and coaches with the latest information on different aspects of sports like training, injuries, basic life support etc. "This is the first-of-its-kind workshop Manipal University Sports Council is conducting and we hope to have more in future," he said adding that such workshops can be tailored to suit specific requirements.

The Council Secretary, Dr Vinod Nayak also said the interest shown by every single individual was encouraging. "That in turn encourages us to have more of these workshops. I do realize how much each one of you want to know and learn about the science in sport," he said.

Some of the wellness and fitness related topics covered include:

Sports Injuries which was handled by Dr Sandeep Goud; Health benefits of Physical Activities on Various Systems of the Human Body by Dr Kumar M R; Dr Fiddy Davis J spoke on, "Time for a fresh look at physical education in schools"; there was a session on, "Performance Enhancement - A Psychological Perspective by Dr Johnson Alex"; another interesting session was on Periodization for Strength Training by Sports Authority of India Bangalore’s Dr Manilal and Handling Gender by Dr Nandini Lakshmikantha.

The hands-on training sessions held at the Medical Simulation Centre of Manipal University where the participants got an opportunity to learn some aspects of basic life support on the mannequins was a revelation for the participants and it was the most informative and helpful part of the workshop,  said those present.
