Mangalore, Oct 27, 2014: Academic Council of Mangalore University has approved 11 new correspondence courses – aimed at certification for employability and skill development – that will begin from the next academic year.

They include two certificate courses – for which a pre-university degree is the basic eligibility – and nine post-graduate diploma courses – which can be pursued after under graduation.

“These courses will help those who seek a skilled job or those who are already in jobs to gain a certification that will aid in them in receiving promotions,” said P.A. Rego, Director, Correspondence Course, Mangalore University. He added that by attracting young professionals to take the courses, the university will be increasing its internal sources of revenue.

The six-month certificate courses – in both Kannada and English languages – include Soft Skills, and Environment Management and Technology. After council members expressed scepticism over the teaching of “soft skills” through correspondence, it was decided to increase the “contact programme” to two weeks, wherein the practical aspects of soft skills will be imparted.

Meanwhile, the university will also introduce a one-year post-graduate diploma correspondence courses, including Mass Communication, Marketing Management, Financial Management, Business Law, Human Resource Management, Human Resource Development, Business Administration, Information Technology, Computer application, Tourism Management, Fitness and sports management.

University officials also expressed interest at extending these courses to students studying in the university – as a form of “open elective” or add-on certification.
