Udupi, Mar 26, 2015: The police arrested 36 persons on the charge of trying to sacrifice hens and goats near the Hosa Mari Gudi shrine during the “Suggi Mari Puja” festival at Kaup in Udupi district on Wednesday.

The district administration had, on March 23, banned animal sacrifices at Hale Mari Gudi, Hosa Mari Gudi and Kalya Mari Gudi shrines during the “Suggi Mari Puja” festival in Kaup on March 24 and 25.

The ban was issued following a directive by the High Court of Karnataka to ensure proper enforcement of Karnataka Prevention of Animal Sacrifices Act 1959. The Act prohibits sacrifice of animals or birds in temples and in any place of religious worship.

Sunil Y. Naik, Circle Police Inspector of Police, told The Hindu that these 36 persons were arrested for trying to sacrifice hens near the premises of Hosa Mari Gudi. They were arrested under Section 6 of the Karnataka Prevention of Animal Sacrifices Act.

The police had made it clear to the authorities of these all three temples that no sacrifices of birds or animals would be allowed on the premises of the temples or the land belonging to them. “All the 36 persons were later released on producing bonds,” he said.

Meanwhile, a large number of people participated in the “Suggi Mari Puja” festival. There was tight police security in the area.
