Awareness of law for common people essential

Mangaluru, Nov 28, 2015: Shivashankar B. Amarannavar, District and Sessions Judge, on Nov 26,  said that all people must have knowledge of law. He was speaking after inaugurating the Constitution Day organised by the Bar Association and District Legal Services Authority.

Judge Amarannavar said that the Constitution Day was being celebrated to mark the adoption of the Constitution of the country on November 26, 1949; it came into force on January 26, 1950.

Laws are meant to protect the environment. Development activities should not lead to reckless exploitation of natural resources. Hence, the answer was to promote sustainable development, he said.  The District Legal Services Authority was holding legal literacy programmes regularly to disseminate knowledge of law among people. The authority also provided legal aid and advice to the the poor and weaker sections of society.

Speaking on ‘Expectations of society from the bench and the bar’, P. Ranjan Rao, senior advocate from Mangaluru, said it was the responsibility of both bench and the bar to provide speedy, cheap and fair justice.
