Mangalore, July 31, 2014:  As per reports, in her statement,   Women and Child Welfare Minister Umashree on July 30, stated that a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) inquiry will be ordered into the mysterious death of Reshma, a destitute who was sent for a skills training programe to an NGO in Mangalore.

She  has said that an inquiry has also been ordered into the funding given to the same NGO - New Dawn Rehabilitation Trust which is run by Ruksana Hassan. The NGO has been recieving funds from the Karnataka State Wakf Foundation to run a home for destitute women.

The minister has said that in 2010, the NGO had taken 15 women from the State Women’s Home for a period of six months for training. But they were not returned on time to the home and the officials were not given any information about the whereabouts of the victim, who died under mysterious circumstance within two days of reaching Mangalore.

A complaint filed in this regard with the department also speaks of a woman who is named Salma, who went missing along with Reshma. However, Umashre said that there was no information about Salma, as there was no records of her being an inmate of the Women’s Home.

The minister also said that there was nothing to show that this girl was ‘illegally’ sent to work in the house of former chairperson of the Karnataka State Wakf Board, Anwar Manippaddi. “With regard to Reshma, there is no information on whether she had been sent to the house of a person by name Yousuf Parodi, a former forest officer to work as a maid,” read Umashree’s statement.

The minister said government officials involved in this have been suspended due to dereliction of duty. Earlier, at the Council, MLCs Allamprabhu Patil and V S Ugrappa tried to raise the issue in the house and get a detailed response from Umashree.
