Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, April 18, 2015: Briefing media, A J Hospital and Research Centre Medical Director Dr Prashanth Marla K said that cadaver  donors can give fresh lease of life to people.  The recent case of Jeevan has set an example for thousands by first ever cadaveric organ donation after the road traffic accident on April 13.

He went on to explain, A J Hospital just played a role of catalyst between the donor’s family and zonal coordination committee. Jeevan has donated cornea, lever and heart valve. The transplantation of heart valve and lever has been done already. His hospital bill was waived off on humanitarian basis, he said and thanked the district administration and police for who had helped to transfer organs by creating ’green corridor’ and also the legal clearances.

Around 150 million people face kidney failure problem in India every year and 1.5 million undergo dialysis. This increases by 10 to 15 per cent every year. Donation is the best solution to this problem. there is a need of 25,000 kidney transplants every year, but on the contrary only 3,500 transplants are being done in the country. According to a survey, around 1,50,000 die due to road accidents in India, out of which at least 50 per cent people reach hospital and later declared brain dead. So, if their relatives agree for cadaveric organ donations, it would save many lives, he said. There are plans to promote this in a big way.
