Campaign launched against land ordinance

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, April 23, 2015 : Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha (KPRS), a wing of the Communist Party of India (Marxists), in association with 10 other organisations, launched a three-day campaign against the Union government’s ordinance on land acquisition here on Wednesday.

The vehicular campaign was launched from the premises of the Deputy Commissioner’s office. The vehicle toured Kuthar, Harekala and Pavoor in Mangaluru taluk on Wednesday.

The vehicle would be in B.C. Road, Polali, Gurupura, Kaikamba and Yedapadavu on Thursday. On April 24 — the last day — it would campaign in Venoor, Belthangady, Ujire and Kokkada.

Addressing a gathering while launching the campaign K.R. Shreyan, president, Dakshina Kannada unit of the KPRS, alleged that the ordinance was aimed at helping capitalists in their investment and it would not benefit farmers. It would only widen the gap between the rich and the poor.

Mr. Shreyan said that people had rights over land and water and the government could not take it away unilaterally for helping multinational companies.

He said the government should withdraw the ordinance or else face intensified agitation. Yadava Shetty, general secretary of the unit, also spoke.

Organisations like Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha, various factions of Dalit Sangarsha Samithi, Karnataka Growers’ Federation and Akhil Bharata Krishi Sabha support the campaign.
