Mangaluru, Nov 13, 2014:  Dakshina Kannada Philatelic Association holds an exposition and symposium  at Head Post office in Pandeshwar Mangalore  every second sunday of the month. In the last addition, rare coins from the era of Princely states and  coins with unusual flwas, were displayed.

Talking with media representatives and participants, a collector  stated that the coins become defective due to various reasons. There are many types of error in coins. In some, both sides are similar,  in others the design has gone beyond the area of impression, due to the misplacing of dies in the mint. In his collection, there were about 100 such coins of different face value. There were also coins from Princely States of British India such as Madras, Baroda, Hyderabad and Travancore, released in and around 1935. Apart from these, the coins dating back to the period of Shathavahanas were also at display. A coin with the image of Lord Rama and Lakshmana which was transacted during the reign of ruler Shathakarni, was an added attraction. The coin was discovered after an excavation work taken up at Thanjavur, he said and added that the Rama and Lakshmana are depicted in the similar way how the people had their outlook in terms of attire.

The coins belonging to Magadha, Kosala, Gandhara, Vidarbha and other places, were part of his collection. Among the coins of the pre-independence era, there was a coin issued by Portugal to mark the 400th year of the visit to Goa. The coin was released in 1898, while the Portuguese discovered Goa in 1498. The commemorative coin features King Carlos I and Queen Mary of Portugal.


A stamp series, possessed by philatelist, on  musicians, which was part of the philatelic exhibition, drew the attention of   enthusiasts.  An illustrious stamp series with the face value of Rs five and 25 featured Pandith Ravishankar, Bhimsen Joshi, D K Pattammal, Gangubai Hangal, Kumar Gandharva, Vilayat Khan, Mallikarjun Mansur and Ali Akbar Khan.


The stamp series was released by the India Post on September 3, 2014.  Often this  exhibition  attracts sellers from Bangalore, Chenai as well as North India.
