Bangalore, Aug 22, 2014: A 28-year-old constable Shafiulla Babu Jan of the Anti-Naxal Force (ANF) landed in police lockup after he allegedly entered a women’s hostel near Agumbe, Shimoga district, 370km from here.

The constable, a resident of Honnali town, joined Bhadravati police seven years ago and four years later was inducted into the ANF, which tackles the Naxal menace in the Western Ghats. He was posted at the Agumbe checkpost. On Wednesday night, Shafiulla, a bachelor, finished his second shift around 8pm, stopped by a wine shop and then went to a hotel in the bus stand for dinner around 9pm.

"He was in the hotel till 10pm. Around midnight, he scaled the compound wall of the women’s hostel on Agumbe-Koppa Road. He was peeping into rooms when a girl saw him and shouted for help," police sources said. The hostel warden and others caught Shafiulla when he tried to escape and handed him to Agumbe police around 1am.

Police produced Shafiulla before a court in Thirthahalli on Thursday. He was remanded to judicial custody and sent to Shimoga prison. He has been booked under IPC sections 447 (criminal trespass) and 506 (act with criminal intimidation).

According to investigating officers, Shafiualla claimed he was drunk when the incident happened. "It is impossible for a drunk man to scale a six-foot compound wall. Shafiulla deliberately trespassed into the women’s hostel," Agumbe police said.
