IVF treatment - Laws to regulate soon

Mangalore Today News Network

Manipal, Aug 4, 2015 : R.S. Sharma, Senior Director-General of  ICMR -  Indian Council of Medical Research,  addressing a symposium on Assisted Reproductive Technology organised by the Department of Clinical Embryology of KMC - Kasturba Medical College  stated that   there are nearly 2,000 test tube clinics all over the country, the government is keen on putting a stop to the unethical practices and bring a law to regulate them.

A  press release from Manipal University August 3,  mentioned , a  Bill on  ART - Assisted Reproductive Technology  has been prepared and is to be tabled in Parliament.  The Bill will bring about regulation of  IVF - ’ In Vitro Fertilization’  clinics requiring them to register and obtain licence before offering  assisted reproduction treatment.

He emphasised the importance of infertility treatment because about 8.2 million couples suffer from infertility in India and this demand had resulted in the mushrooming of several ART Clinics all over the country.   Main concerns are about the quality of services offered by these clinics as most clinics advertise high success rates that did not describe the actual take home baby rate and this misleads patients.

Inaugurating   ISAR-NTC -  Indian Society for Assisted Reproduction-National Training Centre, at the Clinical Embryology Department on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor of Manipal University H. Vinod Bhat said: “Ethics should be the governing principle for any individual who handles gametes and embryos.”

Sadhana Desai, one of the pioneers in setting the trend of infertility practice in the country, congratulated the ISAR and Manipal University for introducing specialised training in clinical embryology.
