Mangaluru, Nov 13, 2014:    Addressing a press meet  on Wednesday November 12, Secretary Eric Ozario said that the award   in the name of late Lawrence Pinto is to be given  every year.    Friends of Lawry have instituted ‘Lawrence Pinto Human Rights Award’ in memory of their friend, late Lawrence Pinto, who fought for the emancipation of the downtrodden, through the Trade Union Movement, throughout his life.

An individual or an institution working for the upliftment of the downtrodden by organising, educating and empowering the oppressed to fight for and obtain justice – be it in the field of trade union, social, economic or political fields – will be eligible.

An active person,  in these movements  who has contributed  significantly, irrespective of the person’s gender, religion, region, linguistic grouping or any other point, will be considered for the award. A panel appointed for the purpose, will select one worthy person, every year.  The award consists of a cash amount of Rs 1 lakh, a memento, a citation and public honour.

The award will be presented  at a ceremony on the first Sunday of January, every year. In the coming year, the award ceremony will be held on January 4, 2015 at Kalaangann.
