Linguistic expert Dr U P Upadhyaya launches Unicode for Tulu script

Mangalore, Sep 16, 2014:   Launching the Unicode version of Tulu script Linguistic expert Dr U P Upadhyaya,  said that the Unicode version of the language would help researchers to know more about the language. The work of K P Rao is model for youth and more youth should take an active interest in  the language. Script is not compulsory for any language. When there is a font, one can develop it according to the needs, he said.

He stressed that Unicode explores the beauty of a language and helps to spread it to an international-level. The Unicode is designed by Dr KP Rao, in association with script designer M G Thomas, the launch was held at the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy Chavadi here on September 15,

Dr K P Rao said that there is hardly any difference between old Malayalam and Tulu script. So, there is no need of a separate Unicode for Tulu script. This font has been developed by following the rules of orthography and typography. Unicode version can be used in Notepad, Wordpad or any typing software. Speaking on the relevance of his work, he said that no one would write ‘Paad dana’ using Tulu script in future. However, one can release the Unicode version of Tulu books so that it would help researchers.

Researcher Radhakrishna Belloore said that people have found many books and manuscripts written in Tulu script.  The Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy should collect such books. Academy President M Janaki Brahmavara, Registrar Chandrahas Rai B, researchers S R Vighnaraj, Prof SA Krishnaiah were present on the occasion.
