MCC demands full-time Commissioner

Mangalore Today News Network

MANGALORE,Sep 30, 2014:  The lack of a full-time commissioner in MCC-  Mangalore City Corporation since three months, created a furore at the MCC Council meet on Monday. Opposition party members and the corporator from CPM demanded the Mayor and Members of Legislative Assembly and Council to prevail upon the State government to appoint a commissioner to the Corporation.

Responding to the demand, MLC Ivan D’Souza said that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah during his visit to Mangalore three days ago had promised of appointing a commissioner within 10 days. Mayor Mahabala Marla too promised that the MCC will get a Commissioner within the next council meeting. However, the claims made by the opposition party corporators on the urgent need of a commissioner did not go well with the Mayor. He said that development works in the city were not hampered as the joint commissioner who has been given the charge of the commissioner was discharging his duty efficiently.

Corporator Abdul Rauf explained the situation of government schools in the city limits which are facing fund crunch as they were caught in between the zilla panchayat and the MCC.   When we approach the Zilla Panchayat to grant the funds, the officials direct towards the MCC as they claim that the MCC was responsible for the schools in the city limits. A clear decision has to be taken to hand over government schools from Zilla Panchayat to MCC, he demanded.

Mayor Mahabala Marla said that he had prepared a draft note to be forwarded to the education department requesting to hand over the schools to the MCC.
