Mangalore, Jan 27,2015:  Mangalore Central will soon get two escalators for the seamless movement of passengers from one platform to another, even as the work on the installation of two elevators is in progress, Anand Prakash, Divisional Railway Manager, Southern Railway’s Palakkad Division, has said.

He was speaking after hoisting the national flag to celebrate Republic Day at Palakkad on Monday. Meanwhile, the mechanised cleaning of coaches, with the help of high-pressure jet machines, currently used for primary maintenance at Kannur and Mangalore Central, would shortly be available at Mangalore Junction and Palakkad Junction, he said.

Increase in earnings

Mr. Prakash said the earnings recorded by the division from April to December, 2014, was Rs. 953.14 crore as against Rs. 771.16 crore during the corresponding period of the previous year.

The earning from goods were Rs. 412.69 crore, 30.18 per cent more from the Rs. 317.01 crore last year.

The passenger earnings have been Rs. 489.43 crore, surpassing the Rs. 410.85 crore in the previous year.

Monthly ticket checks have brought in Rs. 51.56 lakh till December, 2014, and the division earned Rs. 11.56 crore through the sale of scraps, Mr. Prakash said.

The division achieved 94.5 per cent punctuality of Mail/Express trains and 96.4 per cent for passenger trains during April-December, 2014.

It operated 415 special train services during the current financial year of which, 159 were run in December alone. 167 coaches were augmented during this year to clear extra rush of passengers.
