Modi-regime focussing away from Hindutva’

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, Dec 20, 2014: Anand Teltumbde, professor at Vinod Gupta School of Management, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, on Friday said that people were bewildered to see the Narendra Modi-regime focussing away from the Hindutva stance of self-reliance of India’s economy.

Delivering the key-note address at a seminar on ’Nationalism as a religion: trends in India’ at Pompei College at Aikala, he said it was a strategy to strengthen their stronghold.

In his opinion, the symbolism and institutions of “Brahminical Hinduism” were used to restore the lost “imagined glory” of “Bharat Mata”. They tried to hide that it was the caste system and its related evils that hampered India’s development. The basic project was to restore the supremacist position of Hindutva which he said was being spoken unambiguously by Mr. Modi. His “development plank” was giving away public resources to capitalists.

He traced the emergence of nationalism to the leaders of the Indian National Congress and he quoted a study to say, “many voices within the Congress employed Hindu symbolism as a strategy for mass mobilization.”

R. Shashidhar, Department of Studies in English, Mangalore University, said it was essential to develop new concepts to counter the versions of “Hindu nationalism that is holding back progress and development of this country.”
