Mookambika Road Byndoor Station undergoes a sea change

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, April  1, 2015 :The Mookambika Road Byndoor Railway Station, catering mainly to pilgrims visiting Kollur Mookambika Temple in Udupi district, has undergone a silent, but an enormous change. In the place of a dingy building, a large station building with several passenger amenities is getting ready to serve passengers.

Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd. (KRCL), under whose jurisdiction Byndoor falls, has taken up the renovation work.

While the old station building was located on the eastern side of the track (towards Western Ghats), the new building has come up on the western side, thus bringing the station closer to the National Highway.

While indiarailinfo.com forum member Ajay M. Krishnan noticed the developments during his journey towards Mumbai and back in February and March and clicked some pictures, Mookambika Road Byndoor Rail Yatri Sangha president Kunjal Venkatesh Kini told The Hindu that the new building would go a long way in the overall development of the backward Byndoor region.

He said that the former Chief Minister and Shivamogga Lok Sabha member B.S. Yeddyurappa had sanctioned Rs. 2.65 crore when he was in office. KRCL too is spending close to Rs. 2 crore for the new facility, Mr. Kini said.

Largest station

A KRCL official said that with a 93-m long station building and 10 m x 600 m platform, the Byndoor station is the biggest station in the Konkan Railway network, after Madgaon.

The platform can accommodate a full train (24 coaches).

It cannot be compared to the old station building, which was housed in a dingy structure. Mr. Kini’s information is that KRCL plans to construct retiring rooms on the first floor in future. The official said that the new station building has waiting rooms for men and women passengers and VIPs, along with toilets.

Adequate lighting, drinking water and a number of benches have been provided on the platform. The approach road from the National Highway is in the final stages of construction.

The station building would also get a welcome arch replicating the Kollur temple.

Advantages

Since the new building, the National Highway (66) and Byndoor bus stand are closely located, passengers would face little hassle in coordinating their journey.

Mr. Kini said that every half an hour, there is a bus service between Byndoor and Kollur (fare Rs. 18), a distance of 26 km, making it affordable.

At present, about 20 trains, both up and down, halt at Byndoor, along with the recently flagged off Byndoor-Kasaragod passenger train.

The station witnesses about 3,000 footfalls every day and earns about Rs. 30 lakh every month as passenger revenue.

While the development work is still in progress, KRCL commissioned the station building without much fanfare on Saturday. Mr. Kini said that all works are expected to be completed before the onset of monsoon.
