NHAI to relay Kuloor-Baikampady stretch

NHAI to relay Kuloor-Baikampady stretch

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Oct 28, 2014:  National Highways Authority of India will relay the bitumen on the stretch of the national highway between Kuloor and Baikampady that is strewn with potholes, bringing to an end the woes of road users.

The stretch of the bridge (towards Mangalore) across the Gurupura river near Kuloor is dotted with potholes, some as deep as a foot. Vehicles move at a very slow pace before reaching the Kuloor flyover causing traffic blocks on the highway.

Uday Kumar, who drives a private bus regularly between Mangalore and Udupi, said that it takes at least 15 minutes to cross the stretch towards Udupi and more than 20 minutes towards Mangalore. A crater near the Baikampady industrial area entrance has swallowed nearly half of the two-lane road, he pointed out.

Trucks regularly pass on this stretch due to the presence of the new Mangalore Port and other industries in the region, said Manjunathaswamy, a private factory employee.

Therefore, the movement of other vehicles gets affected, especially during the morning and evening hours, he said. National Highways Authority of India project director Shriram Mishra told The Hindu that they are prepared to fill the potholes as an immediate measure. Continuous rain has affected their plans andthe potholes would be filled after the rain abates, he added.

The authority will relay the road as a permanent measure. As only one contractor had shown interest in the tenders that were floated earlier, fresh tenders will be floated, Mr. Mishra said.
