Pacchanady residents woes - Paura Vedike inauguration Oct 19

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Oct 18, 2014:   Addressing a press meet here earlier in the week,  Vedike President Mohan Pacchanady alleged that the area corporator had not bothered to know their many  hardships and solve them.

They threatened to intensify their agitation if authorities failed to address their problems.  To urge the authorities to provide basic facilities including road, street lights, drains and shift dumping yard from Pacchanady, the residents of the ward have formed Paura Vedike Pacchanady. The vedike will be inaugurated on October 19.

“Even now the waste is being disposed off in an unscientific manner, with an open dumping area at Pacchanady. The result is foul smell, breeding of houseflies and other pests and creation of leacheate, pose a serious threat to the underground water sources. Though the authorities claim that waste from the landfill site is recycled in a tank, in reality no water is recycled and let into the nearby drain.” “The water seepage has polluted the wells in the vicinity.

For a population of 10,000, the ward has only 22,000 litre capacity water tank. The MCC boasts of supplying water for 24X7 in its wards. However, in ward no 19, water is supplied for half an hour to one hour in aday. If there was any break down in pipes, then the residents will not get water for three to seven days. Water is not supplied to all the residents,” he said.

Absence of PDS  :  He said that though majority of  poor labourers reside in the ward, there is no Public Distribution system in the ward. The ward residents have to travel to Padavinangady to avail the ration. The authorities should ensure that PDS is opened in the ward itself.  The Vedike also urged the MCC to develop a park situated in front of Mangala Jyothi School.

Advisor B S Chandru said that the ward has six booths including Karmika Nagara, Shivajinagara, Ashraya Colony and Santhosh Nagara. However, UGD is still a mirage. Owing to lack of UGD facilities, drains overflow right in front of a few houses. The Mangalore City Corporation should shift dumpyard to outskirts of the city corporation.

He said that “there are no storm water drains in the ward. Rain water flows on the road itself. Atleast 500 houses in the ward do not possess title deeds and the door number. The MCC should initiate measures to distribute the same. The encroached government land in the ward should be reclaimed.” The interior roads in the ward are in deplorable condition. The surface of the roads have been chipped off, causing inconvenience to the vehicle users.” Aswitha and Latha said that only two buses travel to Pacchanady ward from State Bank area. Additional buses should be introduced to help the schoolchildren to reach the school on time. The authorities concerned need to give due attention.
