Mangalore, July 23, 2014:   In an awareness talk to prisoners at Mangalore District Prison July 22, at a programme jointly organised by Prison Ministry India in association with Prisons Department and District Legal Services Authority to create awareness on ill effects of tobacco consumption,  Senior Civil Judge and District Legal Services Member Secretary Ganesh B.  noted that addiction turns human beings into slaves and they lose control over their higher faculties.

Many a time, innocent people fall prey to bad habits just for fleeting momentary happiness they continue and it is a bad habit  it then goes on to addiction and a number of people fail to come out of  addictions.

“Only awareness can help ‘slaves’ overcome addiction,” he said and added that good habits help persons maintain good health too.  Speaking after inaugurating the programme, PMI Coordinator Fr Elias D’Souza said that regular tobacco chewing will not only deteriorate one’s health, but also take away health as well as peace of mind.  Citing a number of examples on the ill effects of tobacco consumption, Link De-Addiction Centre Administrator Lydia Lobo explained addictions. Stressing the need to abstain from bad habits, she cited afew examples of achievers, who ruined their life due to addiction.

To a query by a prisoner that there are many consumers for tobacco as they are easily available, Lobo said that the it is the consumers who create the market for any product. “If you do not buy a product, will it sustain in the market for long time,” she questioned.  She also showed the photos and videos of persons suffering from different types of cancers, which is a fall out of prolonged addiction.

Presiding over the programme, Prison Superintendent Ramesh P S said that it may not be easy to give up addiction. However, a strong will power to control consumption over a period of time will definitely help overcome addiction. “A long journey begins with just a single step,” .
