Robbery attempt foiled, couple caught

Mangaluru, nOV 01, 2014: A couple attacked a 19-year-old woman in her beauty parlour and escaped with her gold chain near the busy Surathkal market in Mangalore on Friday morning. While she resisted the attempt, people of the area chased and caught the couple.

Surathkal police said Suman (26), native of Rajasthan, came to Surabhi Beauty Parlour and asked Akshata Shetty to do a facial massage for her. Around 10.30 a.m. when asked to pay the charges, Suman reportedly asked her husband Sandeep Kumar (34), who was standing outside the parlour, to walk in and pay.

Akshata refused to allow him inside, but Sandeep Kumar forced himself inside. He then hit Akshata on her head with a sharp object and went out of the shop. His wife Suman followed him, allegedly after snatching the gold chain that Akshata wore. She raised alarm that made people chase the couple and catch them, the police said.

Akshata Shetty, who is nursing her injury in private hospital, said Suman had visited the parlour on Thursday evening and inquired about the time the parlour would open on Friday. Suman was the first customer for the day. “When the woman tried to pull my chain, I managed to hold it and scream. She tried to smother me, but I managed to pull her out of the parlour,” Ms. Shetty said.

The police said the couple had been searching for a job in Mangalore for last few days. They were staying in a lodge room in Surathkal and had kept their two children locked in. They ran out of money on Friday, the police said.
