Schools given time till June 1 to install CCTV cameras on buses

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, Mar 31, 2015 : The Dakshina Kannada Regional Transport Authority (RTA) on Monday asked schools in the district to install closed circuit television cameras on all school buses by June 1.

RTA Chairman and Deputy Commissioner A.B. Ibrahim said that all schools should comply with the directive without fail. Superintendent of Police S.D. Sharanappa said that the direction would be strictly implemented following instances of child abuse being reported from the district.

Mr. Sharanappa also said that schools should get the antecedents of the bus crew, including drivers and cleaners, verified by the local police. The State Transport Authority had recently come out with a set of guidelines to be followed by schools with respect to school buses. They include installation of CCTV cameras, verification of antecedents of bus crew by the police, and deploying at least one female attendant on the bus till the last child is dropped back home.

Meanwhile, Mr. Sharanappa urged parents hiring vehicles on their own to get the antecedents of the drivers verified by the local police.
