Mangalore, Sep 30, 2014: Speaking at a public meeting of the Task Force at the deputy commissioner’s office here on September 28, Chairman T S R Subramanian said,  With the Government of India initiating the process of linking every block headquarter in the country with broadband connections, the postal department too will witness technological upgradation, said Task Force on Leveraging the Post Office Network .

The Task Force has been visiting various States to gather suggestions and ideas on leveraging the post office network. The government has planned to provide broadband connection to at least one post office in a panchayat. As many as 25,000 regular post offices in the country will be computerised by 2015 and the work on it is taking place well in advance. This will help to connect post offices and improve the delivery speed. The basic idea is to promote the postal department by computerising the system, Subramanian said.

Further, he said that nearly 1,35,000 sub post offices can be equipped with biometric and Iris system with profile of each resident of the particular panchayat. This will enable the post master to do the transaction on computer easily. The challenge ahead is not just the quick delivery of written documents, but also delivery of goods by providing an efficient postal network. The Task Force has been formed to uplift the postal department which is on the verge of decline.

ZP CEO Tulasi Maddineni submitted before the Task Force to link Aadhar process with the postal department. Post offices could be made as Aadhar enrolment centres in the long run, by scrapping the current process of outsourcing. She also suggested to use post masters to disseminate information on government schemes like MGNREGS and reward them with incentives.

The Task Force Chairman who appreciated the novel ideas promised of considering it in the report. However, the postal department can not offer free service to the people at any cost. Every service is offered with a nominal price, he said. Subramanian also asserted of considering a suggestion made by Activist Suresh Shetty. Shetty suggested to promote small savings in postal department, among children. Many useful schemes were unknown to people he pointed out.
