Two arrested on the charge of assault

Mangaluru, Feb 26, 2015:  Two persons have been arrested in connection with the assault on Mohammed Riaz (20), a student of a college in Surathkal who was in a picture that showed his classmate lying on the lap of five girls and was circulated on a social messaging app.

The Surathkal police said the two arrested, in their late 20s, are painters and residents of Surathkal.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) K. Santosh Babu said that they were among six persons who had assaulted Riaz on February 22. The police are searching for the others involved in the incident.

A group of persons had assaulted Riaz after he reportedly refused to reveal where his classmate, seen in the picture, was staying.

The police have accused Raiz’s two classmates Ritesh and Vinith, who clicked the image, of being part of the assault. They have registered an attempt to murder and a kidnapping case.

Mr. Babu said they were checking who and how this image had been circulated on a social messaging app and social networking sites. A case has been registered under Section 66 (A) of the Information Technology Act.

Two held

In another case of stones being thrown at a place of worship in Kulai, the Surathkal police have arrested Abhijit (18) and Ranjit (21) of Surathkal. Mr. Babu said the accused reportedly wanted to retaliate the burning of a banner related to the Vishwa Hindu Parishad’s Samajotsava, which is scheduled on March 1.

Mr. Babu said the images of the act by the two persons were caught on the closed circuit cameras installed.
