Valedictory of a two-day ’AYUSH Utsav’

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, Nov 24, 2014 :   Ganesh Karnik, Chief Whip of the Opposition in the Legislative Council,  on Nov 23,Sunday strssed that  Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Sidda and Homeopathy doctors not confuse the ancient and established  systems of medicine by seeking to implement  a unproven mix of medical disciplines. He was speaking at the valedictory of a two-day AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Sidda and Homeopathy) Utsav—a state-level conference organised by the Karnataka Ayurvedic and Unani Practitioners’ Board on Nehru Maidan.

He also said they should ask for appointment of AYSH doctors on a permanent basis in primary health centres and an amendment to the cadre and recruitment rules for appointing government doctors to include AYUSH graduates in government recruitment. “We [the legislators] will be with you in pursuing the goals,” he said.

He said the AYUSH systems of medicine are being accepted worldwide for their inherent values and hence one should not depart from it. There could be greater opposition for the demand for inter-disciplinary practice, he cautioned.

One should instead go deep into the chosen field of medicine and become an expert in it,  Karnik suggested. While 92 per cent of MBBS graduates are prepared to pay the fine not to render mandatory rural service, AYUSH graduates are prepared to serve in rural areas and the government should consider this seriously, he said.

Speaking earlier, Minister of State for Youth Empowerment and Sports K. Abhayachandra Jain said the demand of AYUSH doctors for appointment in primary health centres would have to be considered by the government.

The two-day conference resolved to urge the government to appoint AYUSH doctors on permanent basis in all primary health centres; to appoint AYUSH specialist doctors in all taluk and district hospitals after providing basic infrastructure; to allow AYUSH doctors for inter-disciplinary practice in emergencies after offering bridge-courses; to include inter-disciplinary emergency services in the syllabus of AYUSH courses and to implement a cabinet decision of January 2013 for equal pay to AYUSH doctors on a par with doctors with Health and Family Welfare department.

Board President Satyamurthy Bhat, District Medical Officer H.R. Rajeshwari Devi and others participated in this lively programme.
