Artist re-creates iconic images with world?s most famous doll

She may have been around for over 50 years, but Barbie has been on a time trip re-creating iconic images from Ancient Egypt right up to the 21st century.

Jocelyne Grivaud, an artist and fan of the doll has re-created the famous artwork by replacing the muses with inspired the masters with Barbie dolls.

Combining her happy childhood memories of playing with the plastic dolls and pictures she admires, Ms Grivaud has re-created 20 representations using the Mattel doll.

Royal Barbie: Barbie imitates the famous bust of Nefertiti who was the Great Royal Wife chief consort of the Egyptian Pharaoh Akhenaten. Ms Grivaud grew up playing with Barbie dolls and enjoyed dressing them up in outfits her mother had made for them

Jocelyne grew up playing with Barbie dolls and enjoyed dressing them up in outfits her mother had made for them.

Highlights of Jocelyne’s artwork include Barbie as the Mona Lisa - her personal favourite; Barbie draped in pearls imitating Coco Chanel and posed as Marilyn Monroe in Andy Warhol’s pop-art poster.

It can take Jocelyne an hour to several days to recreate the iconic artwork with a playful Barbie twist.

She said: ’Barbie is often criticised for being too blonde, too superficial, too skinny, too ’ideal marketing’, too ’this’ and too "that" so my aim was to adjust Barbie’s profile to resemble iconic representations that were popular and praised throughout history.’
