It’s a move that could leave his neighbours a little spiky.
But, Dudley Haines, a retired roofing contracts manager who did a spot of hairdressing in his teens, insists he never meant to snip his conifers into giant pineapples.
The 68-year-old, from Milton Keynes, says he was forced to leave the tops of the trees bushy because his ladder was too short for him to reach.
’I shouldn’t have let them get so big really,’ Mr Haines said. ’It was a complete accident but they have turned out quite well actually.’
Like many others before him the grandfather-of-two didn’t realise the evergreens would grow more than 20 foot high.
When he bought them as saplings, he was told they would only grow to around 10ft.
But over the last 30 years the conifers have shot up to double that size and need regular pruning to stop them from shading the Haines’ house.
Mr Haines, who lives with wife Jill, 59, even admitted he doesn’t like topiary or gardening for that matter.
’I have always been handy with scissors because I used to be a hairdresser before I was a copper roofer but I’m definitely not a keen gardener,’ he said.
’I have only cut them like this because they are now so tall that I can’t reach the tops. They needed to be trimmed but that was as high as my ladder would go.
