Feb 15, 2015: It’s the season of romance, and it’s not just people who are at it, as these adorable squirrels show.

The duo were starry-eyed for each other in a sweet selection of shots showing that roses mean love in any language.

Squirrels

The squirrel can be seen hanging upside-down from a branch, the rose clenched tightly in his grasp.

Below, his love peers up into her partner’s eyes, before climbing up the rose to unite the love nuts.

The shots were taken by renowned squirrel photographer Max Ellis, from Teddington, South West London.

Throughout the year, Max and his children shoot the critters in a number of amusing poses, enticing the squirrels to their scenes with a number of tasty treats.

Max said: "The tree in which the squirrels live is under threat so I’ve spent the last four months attempting to encourage them to move into a purpose built dray.

"In addition to the pretty rose, the happy couple have been sharing meals of sunflower and pumpkin seeds to get them in the mood."

Squirrels

This winter, the UK squirrel population has been in the news for all the wrong reason as they try to battle the bulge.

The tree-dwellers have been hit as an abundance of food thanks to warmer weather has been helping to fatten them up, according to wildlife expert Iolo Williams.
