The annual event is usually held in the first half of May but this year it has been advanced “to ensure that it does not clash with the silver jubilee celebrations of the Indian Community Benevolent Forum (ICBF),” Goan Welfare Association president Simon D’Silva said.

The ICBF celebrations will be held on May 5 and 6. Qatar Airways is the official airline and the Gulf Times the media sponsor of the May Queen Ball which will be held at the Ramada Plaza Hotel on April 28.

According to the organisers, The Syndicate band consists of seasoned singers and musicians such as Raul D’Mello, Darryl Rodrigues, Diego Fernandes,  Sharon Rodrigues, Paul D’Souza and Adrian Pereira  among others.

The band’s lead vocalist Raul D’Mello has been a regular with MTV shows and has attended premier pageants held in India and outside. He performed at the Cinthol Miss World Ball held in Mumbai in 1996 and is closely associated with the annual Filmfare Awards.

Raul has also performed for royalty and toured with legendary American performers Andy Williams and Greco. Veteran keyboard vocalist Darryl Rodrigues, who is also a key member of The Syndicate,  has performed with famous singers such as Asha Bhonsle, Sharon Prabhakar, Suneeta Rao, Colonial Cousins, Ash Chandler and Mansi Scott at concerts and television  shows in India and abroad. Widely travelled musician Diego Fernandes is also accompanying the band in Doha. Representing India at different festivals held in several world capitals, Fernandes toured extensively with Goa’s renowned musician Remo Fernandes. In 1992 Diego represented the Indian government at the International Creole Festival in Seychelles. Sharon Rodriguez has held concerts in Dubai, Sharjah, Muscat, Bangladesh, Nepal, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and Singapore besides in India. Most recently, she performed with The Syndicate at New York for the Incredible India @60 event, sponsored by the Indian government.
Veteran drummer Paul De Souza and lead guitarist Adrian Pereira are others arriving with the band. Cheryl Almeida and Xavier Fernandes will compere the show this year.
In the past, the May Queen had Bollywood stars as guests. Nationals of any country can participate in the show, the organisers said. Those interested should contact the Goan Welfare Association by the end of this month, D’Silva said.
