Canada, Dcemeber 30: Simmering excitement, laughter, festive competitions, the thrill of winning at Carnival games, mouthwatering aroma brought forth by Mangalorean gastronomic delights – these were the sensations experienced at the Konkan Karnival organized by the Mangalorean Association of Canada (MAC) recently at Sts. Martha and Mary Parish, Mississauga. The event started at 11.00 am with a welcome song and dance and continued with competitions, games, food and sponsor demonstrations.
The Fancy Dress competition was amazingly versatile and demonstrated ample talent amongst the children. Everyone was a winner by virtue of performing characters that were each unique and innovative. The participants of the couple’s fancy dress competition were exceptionally distinctive in the costume design and presentation. The cooking competition had two categories: dessert and salad and participants in each category presented delicacies beyond imagination. Each was a winner by originality, presentation and taste.
The food vendors had serpentine lineups with people impatient to eat the freshly cooked Mangalorean delicacies. Each stall had distinctive and exclusive menus to tickle the palates of the guests. Numerous sponsors from a wide spectrum of professional services and products patronized the event. Each sponsor generously catered to the guests by sharing information, answering questions and encouraging them to use the event as an opportunity to understand and develop awareness of what they provide. MAC appreciates the generosity, encouragement and the willing spirit of the food vendors and the sponsors who exceeded expectations with their flexibility and support.
The Karnival games enthralled the young and old who thoroughly enjoyed the Plinko, horse and car races, dart throw and Spin the Wheel. What is a Christmas season without jolly ol’ Santa who was escorted amidst shouts of joy and wonder by a wagon full of kids, elves and Santa’s helpers! Children danced around Santa, fascinated and awe struck by the jolly old man in red and held out their hands for the chocolates and gifts.
In its second year, the Konkan Karnival succeeded in bringing the community together in oneness of spirit, lighthearted fun and enjoyment. It was truly befitting the Christmas season where volunteers, participants, judges, members and guests dedicated their talents, time, and energy towards making the event a memorable success. MAC is grateful for the wholehearted participation of its community and the assistance provided by the volunteers in an endeavor to make the Konkan Karnival a day to remember.
