Dubai, 22 October 2013: Department of Cardiology, GMC Hospital and Gulf Medical University recently hosted the Second Annual Conference on ‘New Horizons in Cardiology – From Guidelines to Clinical Practice”.

Prof. Gita Ashok Raj, Provost of Gulf Medical University formally inaugurated the conference and honored the invited speakers during the presentation ceremony.

  Prof. Manda Venkatramana, Dean – College of Medicine, Gulf Medical University was present during the function.

Dr. Ehab Esheiba, Clinical Assistant Professor and Head of Cardiology Department, GMC Hospitalstarted the conference with the first lecture that highlighted the latest definition of Myocardial Infarction (the 3rd universal definition). The expansion in modern technology in laboratory investigations, imaging techniques and cardiac catheterization had led to the development of the new universal definition of MI. The lecture was simple and it was meant for it to be like an introductory to the next lecture.

  Later, Dr. M. Rajan, Cardiologist, Zulekha Hospital, Dubai presented the latest clinical practice guidelines published by the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and the American Heart Association (AHA) for the management of ST Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI). The lecture was very informative and relevant to the daily clinical practice by healthcare providers.
 
Dr. Amrish Agrawal, Consultant Cardiologist, Fujairah Hospital, Fujairah spoke about the Novel Oral Anticoagulants (NOACs) and their uses in clinical practice. He highlighted the advantages, disadvantages, dosages & expected side effects of these novel drugs. His lecture was very much appreciated by the audience, as he explained in detail how to practically initiate and monitor therapy of these drugs and to which patient and in which indication.
 
Dr. Rajin Choudhury, Specialist Cardiologist, Cardiac Centre – Al Qassimi Hospital, Sharjah transferred the experience of Al-Qassimi Cardiac Centre to the audience. His lecture was very interactive as he showed the new and emerging technologies used to diagnose and treat different cardiovascular diseases. He highlighted the indications & selection criteria for each procedure, and what added more to his lecture was the video loops that demonstrated the steps used in each technique. From mitral clipping, to renal denervation, to left atrial appendage closure, to ablation in atrial fibrillation to TAVI procedures, the audience got to know about these technologies and became aware of the availability of such sophisticated technologies and procedures in the region.
 
Professor Mahir Khalil Jallo, Associate Professor & Consultant Endocrinologist, GMC Hospital, Ajman with his great experience in Diabetes Mellitus (DM) & Endocrinology addressed the difficult clinical situation, when you face a high risk cardiac patient with complicated and uncontrolled DM. His expertise was reflected on the topic as he surfed through most of the currently available drug regimens and combination therapy for such patients. From patient selection, to safety issues and DM control, the lecture was informative and relevant to the daily clinical practice by all healthcare providers.
 
Dr. Ehab Esheiba in his last lecture in the conference spoke about the latest updates in management of Atrial Fibrillation (AF). The main reason to choose such topic was to update the audience about the introduction of new strategies in the area of AF management, new oral anticoagulants, new oral antiarrhythmic drugs, as well as new invasive procedures.
 
More than 125 delegates attended the conference which was accredited by the Ministry of Health for 6 CME hours.
