Dubai: All set for Mangalore Konkans’ twin plays

Dubai, May 1: Renowned Konkani drama artistes arrived at Dubai International Airport on Wednesday April 30 from Mangalore, to present two Konkani plays at Sheikh Rashid Auditorium (Indian High School), Dubai on Friday May 2 at 6 pm sharp. The event is being hosted by Mangalore Konkans Dubai.

The team of twelve, including two female artistes, most of them young and trained students for theatre, arrived fully charged, brimming with enthusiasm, excited as ever to step on the stage to deliver their performances on Friday.

Mangalore Konkans Dubai, just after reaching the remarkable milestone of its silver jubilee in October 2013, is here again to present two Konkani plays to entertain and convey a social and moral message, projecting the realities of the modern world. This event is also a part of the mission of Mangalore Konkani Dubai to promote Konkani language and culture in the UAE.

The much-acclaimed Konkani comedy play – ’Mellya Uprant’ written by veteran Arun Raj Rodrigues of Valencia, and another play ’Bomma’ based on the late A T Lobo’s story, adapted and also written by Arun Raj Rodrigues will be presented. Both plays have been directed by Christopher D’Souza of Neenasam. The plays will be performed by ’Kalakul’, Konkani’s lone professional repertory run by Maand Sobhann of Mangalore. Talented and renowned artistes are sure to mesmerize the audience with their electrifying performances on the stage for nearly three hours.

The fact that both these renowned plays, which have won the hearts of thousands of theatre lovers back home in India, are being staged outside India for the very first time, has created lots of interest and excitement among the UAE Konkani lovers. Undoubtedly, these twin dramas would create a milestone in terms of audience appeal, the major ingredients being the theme and comedy all focusing and targeting on out of the world entertainment to carry home and cherish the memories in the years to come.

James Mendonca, the honourary president and Alwyn Pinto, the main coordinator, said that the response has been tremendous and callers from all over the UAE have been enquiring about the availability of the tickets at the gate. Due to the demand for tickets from the public from distant places of the UAE, tickets will be made available at the venue before the event. Mangalore Konkans Dubai members being time conscious and well known for their punctuality said that the plays would commence sharp at 6 pm, to enable the second drama to conclude in time as planned. Audience are request to be at the venue in time, so as not to miss any part of the proceedings.

Despite Friday being a weekend and filled with lots of other entertainment activities organized by many of Dubai Konkani groups, the response for these twin dramas has been overwhelming and the organizers are fully confident that it would be a full house show.
