‘BCCI mulling criminal charges against Modi’

Mangalore, July 3: New Delhi: More trouble seems to be on the cards for suspended IPL chairman Lalit Modi, with media reports on Saturday claiming the BCCI is likely to file criminal charges against him in several cases of major financial irregularity in the Indian Premier League.

Sources said the BCCI is likely to file an embezzlement case of between Rs 1200-1500 crore against the suspended IPL commissioner.

The BCCI has convened a Special General Meeting (SGM) in Mumbai where the final draft of the ‘Modi exit plan’ is being discussed in detail. According to sources, 30 members are attending the meeting and the ones like IS Bindra, who are allegedly close to Modi, are expected to give a miss to the meeting.

Sources say that the BCCI is also considering to replace Shashank Manohar from the IPL panel. BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla and Congress MP Jyotiraditya Scindia are the front-runners to replace Manohar in the IPL panel.

However, sources indicated that Modi will not be ousted on Saturday, as the BCCI is keen to give Modi a fair trial and follow all the procedures.

The SGM is expected to ‘ratify the action of BCCI secretary N Srinivasan’ and discuss in detail the replies by the suspended IPL chairman to notices issued to him.

Srinivasan had earlier rejected Modi`s voluminous replies to the show-cause notices as `unsatisfactory` and referred the matter to the disciplinary committee.

The BCCI members have been provided with copies of Modi`s reply to three showcause notices.

Modi had been charged on several counts ranging from financial irregularities to bid- rigging as chairman of the cash-rich IPL.

Modi, who was backed by BCCI vice president Farooq Abdullah and Bangalore Royal Challengers owner Vijay Mallya when the IPL controversy surfaced, would find the going tough as his support base has quickly waned.
