Bengaluru, March 18, 2025: As many as 15 people have taken their life because of alleged harassment by micro finance institutions (MFIs), and 90 cases booked against these establishments in 2025, Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara told the Council on Monday.
The number of cases booked against MFIs, and instances of suicide owing to harassment by them saw a spike in 2025. In 2023, five people died by suicide and only six cases were booked against MFIs, while 22 cases were registered in 2024, with seven taking their life that year, he said.
The minister said that the government was compelled to promulgate the Karnataka Micro Loan and Small Loan (Prevention of Coercive Action) Ordinance, 2025 after a spate of incidents of harassment.
