19-year-old woman gangraped by autorickshaw driver, his friends in Gurugram

Haryana, May 03, 2018 : A 19-year old woman was allegedly gang-raped by an autorickshaw driver, who gave her a lift, and four other men in Bhondsi area of Gurugram on Tuesday evening, police said on Thursday, in the latest incident of sexual assault against women in Haryana this year.

 

“A case has been registered and we are probing the matter. The accused would be arrested soon,” the spokesperson of Gurugram Police, Ravinder Kumar, said.

A case was registered at Bhondsi police station for gangrape, causing hurt by means of poison and criminal intimidation after the woman lodged a complaint on Wednesday.

The woman, who lives in a village few kilometres from Sohna, told the police that she was waiting for a bus at Sohna bus stand around 8pm, when the auto rickshaw driver offered her a lift.

She said the driver told her the bus to Aligarh had left and that she could take a train from Gurugram. She agreed to take a lift but the driver took a turn towards Raisina crusher zone after a while and despite her protests, he did not stop.

“The accused stopped the vehicle at a secluded spot where there were a lot of bushes and I saw four other persons waiting there. The accused caught hold of me and they took turns to rape me. When I tried to fight them off, they pinned down my hands and legs,” she told the police.

The woman told the police that when she fell unconscious, the driver poured some water into her mouth. They also threatened to kill her if she told anyone about the rape, police said.

She lost consciousness again and after when she opened her eyes, the men had left the spot. The woman reached home and told her family members about the sexual assault and they took her to the police the next day.

The woman also told the police the name of one of the men they were calling out during the assault.

The number of crime against women in Gurugram has been rising in the past few years. Last year, the police filed 135 cases of rape up from 131 in 2016. The number of molestation cases also increased from 272 in 2016 to 303 in 2017.
