2.5 magnitude earthquake shakes Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi

Uttarkashi, Mar 06, 2023: An earthquake measuring 2.5 on the Richter scale hit Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi on the intervening night between Saturday and Sunday. The quake struck at around 12:45 am. The India Meteorological Department said the epicenter of the quake was a forest in Siror village under Bhatwadi tehsil.

So far, there haven’t been any reports of any casualties or loss of property yet.

The initial jolt was followed by three tremors which all occurred within five to 10 minutes. The locals who were woken up by the quakes rushed to the streets in panic.

This comes days after a 2.4 magnitude earthquake hit Uttarakhand’s Pauri Garhwal district on Thursday. Earlier in December too, a 3.1 magnitude earthquake hit Uttarkashi in December 2022.

Uttarkashi is located around 290 kilometres away from Joshimath, the holy town which has been slowly sinking.
