2 arrested for links to ISIS in Karnataka’s Shivamogga

Shivamogga, Sep 20, 2022: Shivamogga Police registered a case against three suspected ISIS terrorists on Monday and arrested two of them on Tuesday. A third suspected terrorist is currently on-the-run and officials are trying to nab him as well.

The three accused terrorists were identified as Muneer Ahmed (22), Syed Yasin (21) and Shariq. Police arrested Muneer and Yasin, whereas the prime accused, Shariq, is absconding.

Police filed an FIR in the case on Monday and arrested the two men on Tuesday. They were produced before a judge and taken into police custody.

According to the police, Yasin and Mahaz were arrested after investigations revealed that they had links to banned organisations. Officials added that they were connected to a stabbing.

A man identified as Prem Singh was allegedly stabbed amid the Savarkar row in Karnataka. The accused in this case allegedly had links to the two arrested men, Yasin and Muneer Ahmed.

ACCUSED HAD BURNT NATIONAL FLAG

Assistant Superintendent of Police, Bhadravathi Jitendra Kumar, who had lodged a complaint, alleged that the accused are connected with ISIS and conspired to acts of terror by waging war against the country and destroying public property.

They also allegedly possessed explosives and had burnt the national flag. They were produced in front of the court and taken into police custody from September 20 to 29.

Shivamogga Rural police station filed a case under Sections 120B, 121, 121A read with 34 of the Indian Penal Code, 18, 38, 39 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and Section 2 of the Prevention of Insult to National Honours Act.

HOME MINISTER’S STATEMENT

Speaking about the arrest of the two suspected ISIS terrorists, home minister Araga Jnanendra, said, “Shivamogga Police have identified 3 terror suspects. These three people were in contact with ISIS. It has come to the fore in the preliminary investigation of the police and Muneer and Syed Yasin were arrested.

He added, “The third accused is absconding. A case has been registered under the sections of UAPA, the police have information about the absconding accused. All three are residents of Shivamogga and Tirthahalli. They were active in the coastal districts of Karnataka.”

“I do not have information about what they were doing, what the background was. Shivamogga Police is investigating. However, we have solid information that they have links with a terrorist organization. Everything will be clear after the investigation,” added the home minister.
