New Delhi, July 10, 2023: Five people, including two soldiers, were killed on Sunday as heavy rains and unseasonal snowfall continued to wreak havoc in Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir for the third consecutive day.
A defense spokesperson told news agency PTI that the two army personnel lost their lives after being swept away by flash floods while attempting to cross a stream in the Poonch district.
In a separate incident, a landslide occurred along the Bhangrooon Thathri-Gandoh village road in Doda, tragically claiming the lives of two bus passengers identified as Amir Sohail and Mudassar Ali. Another passenger sustained injuries and was successfully rescued, as confirmed by Bhaderwah Superintendent of Police Vinod Sharma.
In another incident, an individual named Mohammad Kazim lost his life after his vehicle was crushed by a rolling boulder near Pandrass village along Leh-Srinagar national highway in Ladakh’s Kargil district.
Several high-altitude areas of Ladakh, including Rangdum, Pensi La and Zanskar in Kargil also witnessed unseasonal snowfall, while towns received heavy rainfall.
The weather department has issued a ‘red alert for the region for the next 24 hours. Additionally, the weather department also issued a ’red’ warning for Kathua, Samba and other lower catchment areas of Jammu region for the next 24 hours.
Meanwhile, the State Disaster Relief Force (SDRF) rescued as many as 40 people who were trapped in various parts of the Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir due to torrential rains in the region.
