2 toddlers die in rain-related incidents in Kerala, heavy downpour disrupts life

Thiruvanantapuram, Nov 15, 2021: Two toddlers died in separate rain-related incidents in Kerala as incessant rain battered the state over the weekend. The heavy downpour disrupted life in the state, with waterlogging reported in several areas.

The body of a three-year-old boy who fell into a swollen stream nearby his house was recovered by a joint rescue team, consisting of police, Fire force and civil defence members from a bund across the stream downstream.

According to the police, the child, who came out of the house along with his mother, ran towards the stream, slipped and fell into it. His mother jumped after him to save the child but she was unable to save him.

In another incident, a young child from Kannur district also lost his life on Sunday after he fell into a well pit that was swelled with rain water.
Meanwhile, the incessant downpour over the weekend has led to waterlogging in several parts of the state. Several areas of Kerala’s Upper Kuttanad are heavily waterlogged.Kerala has been receiving incessant rain over the weekend, prompting authorities to ask residents to stay alert.

Earlier, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had cautioned about possibility of landslides and flooding after the weather department issued an orange alert for several districts in the state, predicting widespread rainfall over the weekend.

The heavy rains inundated roads in several parts of southern Kerala, which also saw landslides in some parts.

The water level in various dams in the state also rose to the red alert mark, prompting the government to open one of the shutters of Cheruthoni dam of Idukki reservoir on Sunday.

Kerala Water Resources Minister Roshy Augustine, in a Facebook post, said that in view of heavy rains in southern parts of the state, it has been decided to raise the shutters of the dam by 40 centimetres at 2.00 PM on Sunday to control the rising water level there.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi appealed to party workers to help out the people of Kerala.
